Having just read an article cunningly titled "Fruit Machines 2" by
SparHawk, I think I should clear up a pretty big (and annoying) myth, as
I myself own a fruit machine (a fullsize one called "Pound Rush" - 4
jackpot).

When people say only play machines that are "ready to pay out", is total
& utter plop. Fruit machines "pay out" when they are "programmed" to.
Heres how you "program" one (well mine anyway) :

1: Open the back of the machine (you need the key for this)
2: The top half (of the insides) will more often than not contain lights,
the money sorting mechanism, 6 tudes (5 for "normal" coins and 1
containing tokens) leading from the money sorting thing down to the
bottom of the machine - more on this later ...
3: The bottom half of the inside of the machine will be a big black
panel. This will have various wires, lights, and things that look
like cartridges stuck in the back of it (one of them is infact a
cartridge, it contains various info on the winning reels, etc). It
   actually looks quite scary.
4: Near the bottom-right of the panel you'll find a small-ish cutout
with about 7 little "flick" switches. The top of the switches have
an 0 above them, and the bottom of the switches are a 1.

These 7 switches (I think they're number 0-6) will determine the
frequency of which the machine will pay out. Its got nothing to do with
wether the machine is full & "ready to pay out".

Oh, and even if you did get access to the back while you're playing the
machine (so you can see all of the reel(s)), there's NO WAY you'll know
which reels are going to "come in". Unless of course you're using
nudges.

By the way, trying to move the reels while the machine is on, is a big
NO NO - as it makes a very loud "nnnnnnhhggggg" sound (I think its coz
the motors that spin the reels are continously active). And NO you
cannot turn the machine off and turn the reels into a winning position
and then turn it back on again to win. Everytime you turn the machine
on, it'll reset itself by spinning the reels twice and then going into
demo mode (flashing the lights, etc). Say you had 20 credits in the
machine and you turned it off, when you turn it back on again and the
machine has resetted itself, you'll still have the 20 credits left (you
can have it turned off for months, and it'll still "remember" them).

Here's a little a tip of most machines with a trail feature:

When you are about to get a trail, hold down the button you normally
need to stop the trail BEFORE the trail starts oscillating (spelt
wrong?), the whole machine will look like it has stopped working (the
lights will still be on though) and everything will be quiet. When you
LET GO of the button, it'll start oscillating.

Here's another tip for another machine (I can't remember what it's
called, but it's 10p a credit, it's red & black and the reels are just
covered in noughts & crosses (and =BAR='s as well) instead of pictures
of fruit):

If you have taken the nudges (which always seem to be the maximum of
three and never anything lower) and you have not nudged a winning line
in. If you get offered a hold - IGNORE IT! You *WILL* be guaranteed to
win AT *LEAST* 1 (the lowest win) and maybe you'll get three =BAR='s
(the highest win of 4 - unfortunatly mostly always in bladdy tokens!) !

The most I've ever won is 27 which I won with just 10 credits (1) !!
When you get a winning line (either X X X or =BAR= =BAR= =BAR) and the
bank value is going up, repeatedly press the hold button (or just hold
them down), you should/might then get a hold, so just hold the winning
line again (the most I held the same line for is about 5 or 6 times!).
I don't know if it's just a coincidence or it does infact work - but ya
might as well try it anyway.

When doing that nudging and winning trick thing, when you've pressed the
START button, randomally press the buttons and make yourself look like
you know what your doing - everyone that's watching will think you're a
master or summat!

                                  ---

Oh before I piss off, I'll tell yer the most I've won.

Well, not on my own. Me and this peep that I went to school with at the
time played on a fruit machine. When we finished, we must have had AT
*LEAST* 50 in 10 pee's (and some 1's) !!!! When had to pump some back
in the machine coz we couldn't carry `em all! We piled them all into
our pockets and into our jackets, it was embarrasing as our trousers
were falling down because of the weight of it all!! AND the arcade was
a very small one, so it wasn't very nice while we were stood there and
the owner was watching his machine pay out a shitload of money!!!

By the way, I'm *NOT* one of those gamblers that play on fruit machines
whenever I go into an arcade. I *ALWAYS* prefer to play the games (I
was the champion in my local arcade, and I'm pretty sure I could beat
anyone in Grimsby) - unless I find one of those Naughts & Crosses
machines!

Anyway, thanx for a reading, bub bye!
