Guitar effects pedals, luvverly things aren`t they? They add crunch,
makes the notes creamy, bluesy, make you sound like Jimi Hendrix, Dave
Gilmour etc. The good thing as well is that they are quite cheap, okay
if you want real quality you have to pay but there are some real
bargains to be had.

Me? I`ve recently spent a large wad on some effects pedals cos I wanted
to experiment with different sounds, heres a quick rundown on what I
bought.

Marshall Shredmaster (54 quid)
-------------------------------

I actually bought this pedal last July in Ipswich but its a pedal and
hell, I`m gonna include it. It has five controls, these are....

Gain - Lower settings for clean rhythm, higher for all out sustain even
      at lower volume settings

Bass - Obvious really

Contour - This control is fun, when backed off the sound is smooth for
blues/rock styles, when pushed up we are in full Thrash Metal
          territory.

Treble - Again, obvious control

Volume - Not too high when contour and gain are on full matey!

I use this pedal when in my Napalm Death/thrash modes, you can get some
great effects from this `un, I have to make sure not to hit the strings
too hard as the amp screams otherwise! Sounds great when playing Come
as you Are by Nirvana, even better on Territorial Pissings!

BOSS CS-3 Compression/Sustainer (70 quid)
------------------------------------------

Compressors are boring pedals really, but you`ll find that no guitarist
is without one as they smooth the spiky edges in lead playing, increase
sustain and best of all, if you kill the attack you get a warm rhythmic
edge to chord work. The four controls are....

Level - Volume

Tone - Compression level,

Attack - Controls the pick attack, I.E if you pick softly the sound
is mellow, turn it up and you can really go for it.

Sustain - how long the note lasts before fading.

I love this pedal, its first in line in my rack box and is a gorgeous
dark blue as well!

BOSS BF-2 Flanger (79 quid)
---------------------------

I`ve been interested in flanging effects for a while and this pedal
gives the usual BOSS quality, heres the controls.

Manual - Controls the sound delay

Depth - Controls the sweep width according to the delay time.

Rate - Sweep Frequency.

Resonance - Feedback level.

What a pedal, I`ve worn out two batteries with it and I`ve only had it a
month! Even with the controls on central its expressive, ideal for Pink
Floyd soloing. Lovely shade of purple as well! (For the unitiated,
flanging is the rising and lowering of the sound
 wave (I think!))

Boss DS-1 Distortion
--------------------

Being a Nirvana fan I`ve wanted some distortion for a while, this is the
pedal used on the Bleach and Nevermind albums.
