I don't know if this is widely known or if it's something new, but I
thought I would share it with readers anyway as it's sure to help
someone, it certainly helped me, no doubt you more experienced phone
hackers will know of this already.

On the old pulse exchanges you can type 174 and hang up the phone to
make it ring. This can be used to check the ring volume, make sure the
line is working etc. On a digital exchange this does not work, but I
found that the following does.

|1-BT Line Test Facility: 17070

Dial the number 17070 into your tone phone and listen to the recorded
message, it will tell you the number of the telephone line that you
called from, then press one of the following numbers for the relevent BT
facility:
                        1 - Ring back test

                        2 - Quiet Line Test

Option 1 will call you back when you hang up the phone, pick up the
receiver and the recorded message will tell you the test is completed.

Option 2 doesn't seem to do anything, the recorded voice says "Quiet
Line Test" and that's about it, any info from anyone?
